September 11th, Continued
On the subject of September 11th, one enterprise that does not involve shameless exploitation or dragging-the-horse-out and beating-it-with-a-wet-twig is The Atlantic Monthly’s three-part series, “American Ground: Unbuilding the World Trade Center.”
Atlantic reporter William Langewiesche was given highly exclusive access to the WTC site during the recovery period and in this lengthy tome (to be published as a book in the future), provides a sharp and lifelike portrait of the people and the problems of Lower Manhattan on September 11th, September 12th, and the many months afterward.
I think the series alone makes purchasing the magazine worthwhile, but happily, Atlantic is chock full of other excellent prose (and the odd bit of poetry too). Along with recent issues of Harper’s, Atlantic seems to be challenging the magazine industry to publish words written well enough to be enjoyed by the everyman, but intellectual enough to contribute something useful to the world.
The Atlantic also has an excellent web site. And oddly, both magazines offer attractive subscription rates for Canadians.
