While I prefer the American
While I prefer the American political system to Canada's "elected dictatorship," it is clear from yesterday's proceedings that some serious issues undermine the American system. "No kidding," you're probably saying, "What's wrong with the political system is the politicians."
I'm no fan of "Dubya" either, but the problems I'm talking about are technical. There's something wrong with a decision making process in which:
- A dead man is elected to the Senate
- The media are allowed to "decide" who has won without actually counting any votes. What if people changed their vote because the networks declared Gore had won Florida, only to change their minds .
- The "loser" Gore phones Bush to concede, only to call back to retract.
- If Bush wins, it will be with fewer votes than Gore
- Everything depends on a re-count in Florida, where Bush's brother, the governor, must certify the results. But the attorney-general is Gore's state campaign chair. And hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people accidentally voted for fright-wing candidate Pat Buchanan instead of Gore because of poor text alignment on the ballot. Oh, and maybe we forgot a ballot box.
And everyone said this was going to be a dull election.
Previously: And you thought your vote
Subsequently: The infamous ballot.According to Florida
