Australia Fair, Now’s the Time to Advance

“I’ve got a four-year-old girl and a boy who’s 11, and they see these bastards come here and stand around the sea baths ‘cos their women have got to swim in clothes and stuff, or they see them saying filthy things to our girls,” he said. “That’s not Australian. My granddad fought the Japs to see Australia safe from this sort of shit, and that’s what I’m doing today.”

Is this what passes for “thought” in Sydney’s suburbs? These quotes come from a racist thug who participated in the violence and rioting that broke out in Sydney this Sunday. The violence is occurring between racist white Australians and those of Lebanese descent — or perhaps those who merely appear Lebanese.

Of course there are racists in every society, but it’s even more depressing to read quotes from politicians who say things like, “There were some drunken louts who have indulged in racist remarks but this is not a racist community.” No? What should you call those who gather on a beach in the thousands to wave flags, sing patriotic songs and attack those whose skin is a different colour? Fortunately, at least some people know that this sort of thing doesn’t just happen because of one too many beers.

Still, you don’t have to look far to find hand-wringing and complaints about “politically correct counselling” in mainstream opinion journals. As if sales of alcohol are really the problem. It looks messy on the fringes of Sydney today.
