Chance

I’m not one who puts a lot of stock in chance, but since I bought an external hard drive to backup my laptop a few weeks ago, I’ve already lost data twice requiring me to recover from the backup. Then this morning, I decided it would be a capital idea to tip over the lion’s share of a cup of coffee onto my desk. Brilliant! Yes, this is the best way to start one’s day. My laptop sits pretty atop an elevated stand, so it was unharmed, and even my attempts at aiming the coffee square into the external drive itself failed, as it is raised by a centimetre off the surface. In addition, it is only today, after living in this flat for more than five months, that I noticed that all the fabric in my work space — the carpet, the drapes, even the fabric folders that are my de facto filing system — is the same cream colour that just happens to soak up milky coffee to almost no visible effect. The only things that did get a bit wet were some old receipts. Is this fate trying to tempt my hubris to make the next time extra wicked? What gives?
