A.C. Newman Strikes Again
Fans of “power pop” group The New Pornographers will doubtless wish to know that Pornographer front man Carl Newman has a new solo album entitled The Slow Wonder. A couple of free tracks are available from the Matador Records site. You can also listen to lo-fi extracts at Newman’s site.
Read the long-winded, overly precious Pitchfork review if you like, or just know that the forte of Newman (now “A.C.” rather than Carl) seems to be the same as the Pornographers’: the three-minute single in the finest tradition of AM radio. That is to say, short, catchy and witty.
I had New Pornographers’ songs whirling and bouncing happily around in my head for months after I bought Electric Version last summer, a condition I wouldn’t mind so much being repeated. “Miracle Drug” seems to be doing the trick.
