All Tomorrow’s Parties 2006

The 1990s - 2 The New Pornographers

I spent last weekend at the All Tomorrow Parties festival in windy, soggy Camber, a beach-side village near Rye, East Sussex. Lucky for me and my fellow attendees, it was a posh sort of festival, with “chalets” and indoor concerts. Maybe they tried it once and realized the folly of planning anything outdoors in May in England. (Or in any other month!) Whatever the case, it was a smoothly run affair and even if the accommodations were straight out of a time warp (yes, that’s really where we stayed), the music was not — a lineup chock full of wonderful indie rock goodness.

Above left is the drummer from the incoherently named band 1990s, who were one of the delightful discoveries of the weekend. Perhaps it was the Mick Jagger-style skinny jeans on the lead singer, but they reminded me of classic Rolling Stones rock ‘n roll, a frenetic, fun, full-steam-ahead sort of sound. They hail from Glasgow and maintain the city’s already high standards of musicianship.

Other highlights of the weekend mostly included bands I already know and love, but who’s complaining when they all played within three nights? Spoon, The Decemberists, Broken Social Scene and the New Pornographers (also pictured above) were all fantastic. The Shins, who “curated” the third and final day, finished things off with a grand performance, enough to make me a fan where before I was merely a casual listener.

I took lots of photos so if you missed it, you’ll know why you ought to go next year.
