The Devil’s Playthings

I enjoyed reading this lengthy but fascinating introduction to Warsaw at Idle Words, the web site of Maciej Ceglowski.

Ceglowski has to be a rare species: an ambitious computer programmer who also does oil painting — and he’s got a tasteful, elegant site to boot. His tagline, “brevity is for the weak,” is a nod to his rather non-pithy writing style, but if you have the time, the contents are worth a read.

And his LOAF proposal wins my vote for this year’s “best modern application of classic computer science”, any day. I love seeing good uses for things like Bloom filters (ok, I’m a geek).

Maciej lives in Vermont and occasionally makes it up here for YULBlog. I met him at the last one.

In Earshot

I only really read it for Canucks coverage, but even still it’s nice that The Vancouver Sun finally redesigned its hideously awful website to look like it was designed this century.
