Is That A Warm Front In Your Pocket, Or Are You Just Happy To See Me?

I never thought it could be too cold to blog.

It seems like such a cliché to write about weather, but even the most hardened Quebecers are talking about it. Normally stoic Environment Canada officials have posted a "windchill warning." If you ask me, calling anything a "chill" on days like this is pure self-deception. A chill is something you get when your old house is a bit drafty and it's damp outside. "Go put on a sweater, dear, or you'll get a chill." A chill is when it's snowing and the wind blows the flakes on to your neck giving you a shiver. When you're afraid your nose might actually crack and fall off and you lose your hearing because your ears have gone numb, that's not a mere chill anymore. It's simply peril.

With this dreaded wind peril the current weather report claims it feels like -40. And the humbling truth about that number is that it doesn't matter whether it's Celsius or Fahrenheit, because it's exactly the same temperature in either scale.

On the other hand, it's so cold that it's too cold to be grumpy. There's a communal stick-togetherness in the city. The sun is so loud and pervasive that the world almost seems inviting.

Really, the only thing to do is curl up with your best blanket, a cup of your finest tea, and get started on all those books you received for Christmas. Either that, or play Simon and try and figure out how anyone could have gotten a score of 51 without cheating.

I only really read it for Canucks coverage, but even still it’s nice that The Vancouver Sun finally redesigned its hideously awful website to look like it was designed this century.
