The Yawning 49th Parallel

Yes folks, I’ve been sucked into that vortex of endless television, the Olympic Games. It’s amusing watching the world get excited about events to which they haven’t sacrificed one electron of thought in the last four years — I mean, when was the last time you said ‘super G’ before this month?

More unusually perhaps, Salt Lake City has, thanks to all that figure skating hullaballoo, propelled the ol’ Great White North onto the world stage in fashion disproportionate to our usual world importance. Not to mention in directly opposite proportion to our medal count. (Note the typically Canadian tendency to self-deprecate.)

At any rate, the media have taken us on, damn the torpedoes, and they’ve even moved past Stage I of obsession (“What’s up with those Canadians anyhow?”) to Stage II. (“Boy, We Sure Are Mentioning Canada A Lot; What’s The Deal?”.)

And then there’s Stage III. Satire.

In Earshot

I only really read it for Canucks coverage, but even still it’s nice that The Vancouver Sun finally redesigned its hideously awful website to look like it was designed this century.
